The sprint car world is a better place when Jacob Allen is in victory lane. Allen put on an incredible show on Saturday at Golden Isles Speedway for the High Limit Racing “Deuces Wild” finale. He raced hard with Tyler Courtney and Justin Peck in the late stages of the race and was able to work his way through lapped traffic to take home the $20,000 victory.
On Sunday, Troy Wagaman Jr outlasted Danny Dietrich to win the Icebreaker at Lincoln. Wagaman looked strong and held off Freddie Rahmer and Dietrich to pick up the $6,000 PA Posse season opener. Dietrich settled for second, with Rahmer coming home in third. Aaron Bollinger had an impressive run and finished in fourth, with Chase Dietz charging back through the field after an early flat tire to finish fifth.
Winners
Tyler Courtney (Golden Isles 2/22)
Jacob Allen (Golden Isles 2/24)
Troy Wagaman Jr (Lincoln 2/25)
Notes
Joel Myers Jr won the New Zealand Sprint car title at Western Springs over the weekend. It capped off a great season in NZ for the California racer. He was in contention to win nearly every race he entered, and found victory lane multiple times.
Troy Wagaman Jr winning the Icebreaker comes as no surprise to me. I really liked the speed he and the Heffner Racing no. 27 had toward the end of 2023 and I expect it to carry over into 2024. He has a great chance to take a step toward being one of the top PA Posse drivers this season. It’s great to see the 27 in contention again.
Cory Eliason was not the driver I was expecting to be struggling early on in the High Limit season. Eliason has looked nothing but mediocre during the eight races he has entered this season. It is a new team for him, so I don’t think the struggles will continue deep into the season, but the RSR team is already in a bit of a hole.
Tanner Thorson’s had a roller coaster start to his High Limit season. He was fantastic at East Bay, but struggled mightily at Golden Isles. Overall, I would be pretty satisfied with the start if I was Thorson. This is a brand new team and Thorson really doesn’t have that many winged 410 sprint car starts under his belt. The struggles will happen, but the car definitely had the speed and Thorson definitely has the talent.
Spencer Bayston’s first two reasons of the season at Volusia concerned me a little. That was all for nothing, as Bayston is sitting in fourth in High Limit points after four races and has undoubtedly been one of the most consistent cars in the field. Bayston might not win a bunch of races this season, but he will be consistent enough to be in contention for one of those charters.
There is an open practice at Port Royal next weekend. The pre-entry list for the practice session is pretty interesting. It is obviously not 100% accurate, as Bill Balog is one of the drivers listed. Other drivers on the list include Zeb Wise, Lance Dewease, Tyler Courtney, Paulie Colagiovanni, and Brian Brown. With a lot of money on the line this season at Port Royal, I expect a large field of cars to be in attendance.
