Toward the end of 2023, a new winged sprint car series was created; the Maverick Winged Sprint Car Series. Founded by passionate sprint car fan, sponsor, and car owner, Kevin Newton, the series held it’s inaugural event at Lincoln Park Speedway in Indiana on October 6, 2023. Not knowing what to expect, the race drew 49 entries and was won by Cale Thomas in the Jay Kiser Racing no. 23.

Speaking to SprintCarUnlimited’s Jeremy Elliot, Newton said he created the series because there was winged sprint car void in Indiana. He simply did not want to have to travel four hours to get to the closest winged 410 race. While wingless sprint car racing is the dominant force in Indiana, Newton wanted to provide an opportunity for those guys to put a wing on top and race for some more money. Check out the full interview below.

So, what can we expect from the series in 2024? For starters, a lot of winged sprint car races in Indiana. The 2024 schedule includes 13 races, with 12 of them taking place in Indiana. The series will team up with the IRA Sprints for a “Maverick Mayhem” week on 6/20-6/23. Each race will have a $26,000 purse and pay $6,000 to win and $500 to start.

2024 Schedule

  • 4/12 Bloomington
  • 5/5 Terre Haute
  • 5/17 Bloomington
  • 6/20 Lincoln Park
  • 6/21 Bloomington
  • 6/22 Tri-State
  • 6/23 Terre Haute
  • 7/12 Bloomington
  • 7/13 Red Hill
  • 8/17 Lincoln Park
  • 8/30 Bloomington
  • 9/15 Terre Haute
  • 10/4 Lincoln Park

With so much going on in the winged sprint car world with the World of Outlaws and High Limit, this new regional series will provide an opportunity for local racers and teams to race for a nice payout. Since the series will be racing within close proximity to Ohio, you can expect a good amount of those teams to make the journey over to Indiana. While I don’t think we will be seeing any fancy driver announcements like we are seeing with the WoO / High Limit, there will be no shortage of interest from local teams.

Thomas “T-Mez” Meseraull was the first driver to officially announce his plans to compete in the series. T-Mez, who finished in 6th during the inaugural race at Lincoln Park, cited that he was excited for the opportunity to race for more money, as racing midgets is not enough to support a family. While nothing is official, here are some other drivers you might see in Maverick competition in 2024.

  • Cale Thomas
  • Zane DeVault
  • Skylar Gee
  • Darin Naida
  • Logan Seavey
  • Kevin Thomas Jr
  • Travis Philo
  • Lane Racing 4
  • Danny Smith
  • Cole Duncan
  • Brady Bacon
  • Scotty Thiel
  • Robert Balou
  • Trey Jacobs
  • Emerson Axsom
  • Conner Morrell

It’s not often that a lot of the wingless sprint car standouts get an opportunity to put a wing on and race in familiar territory. You will get to see a lot of that with this new series in 2024. Newton has four cars and four motors, and we have seen him be more than willing to let others drive his cars. Hunter Schuerenberg, Parker Price-Miller and Kevin Thomas Jr were just a few of the drivers who wheeled an Honest Abe Roofing no. 16 machine last season.

The 2024 sprint car season is going to be one of the most exciting in recent memory, but it’s not just because of the two national series going head to head. Series like Maverick and the FAST series in Ohio have a lot of potential for good racing and solid payouts. Stay tuned for more updates on Maverick and all other 410 sprint car series.
