The 2023 United States sprint car season is over for most drivers, but not for the teams headed to Australia and New Zealand. Earlier this week, I reported that Rico Abreu, Brock Zearfoss, Cory Eliason, Brad Sweet, Joel Meyers Jr. and Brenham Crouch have plans of spending their offseason down under. That list is already growing and will continue to grow as more drivers announcer their plans.
Headlines
Chase Randall announced that he would be joining the list of drivers headed to Australia. The 360 Knoxville Raceway track champion plans to compete in 18-20 races from December through January. Randall made huge improvements during his 2023 campaign and will look to continue to sharpen his skills against some of the best drivers in Australia.
On Friday night, Gio Scelzi joined David Gravel on an episode of The Gravel Show. Scelzi did not confirm his 2024 plans, but he did hint that he would be rejoining the World of Outlaws next season. He stated that it would be “weird not racing against Brad Sweet every weekend” next year. While nothing is set in stone, I think we can rule Gio out as a possible full time High Limit driver.
Michigan’s Butler Motor Speedway confirmed that High Limit will be sanctioning the Mace Thomas Classic for 2024. The race will pay $12,000 to the winner and take place on June 1st. It will mark the inaugural visit to Butler for High Limit, as the race has been previously sanctioned by the All Stars.
What’s Happening in Australia?
It was a clean sweep for Jamie Veal at Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway over the weekend. Veal went quick time in his group, won his heat and won the A-Main. He was able to get by early race leader Brock Hallett to pick up the victory. Hallett finished second, and was followed by Chad Ely, Tate Frost and Ryan Newton.
It was good to see Marcus Dumesny back in action after he suffered a season-ending back injury last year. He was running inside the top three before suffering a flat and a DNF. Some other drivers in the field that spend some time in the states included Rusty Hickman and Lachlan McHugh.
At Perth Motorplex, Dayne Kingshott won round 3 of the Maddington Toyota Sprintcar Series. Kingshott was followed by Kris Coyle, Andrew Priolo, Michael Pickens, and Jason Kendrick.
Thats it for this weekend’s roundup. With the season over, we will try and keep up with some of the Australian Sprint Car scene and continue posting driver news and series announcements.
