Earlier in the week, I highlighted some other regional sprint car series that could potentially work together to fill the void created by High Limit buying the All Stars and going national. New High Limit race director Mike Hess stated via X (Twitter) that he did not expect the series to work together with other regional series for a joint program. I understand that High Limit is trying to build their own brand and separate themselves, but neglecting to work together with other series seems problematic for the sport.

Today, we finally got some good news that local race teams and drivers can get excited about. Kevin Newton and his Maverick Winged Sprint Car Series, along with J.S. Promotions announced that they would be holding “Maverick Mayhem Week” running from June 20-23 at Indiana area dirt tracks. The week will include four races and will be co-sanctioned by the Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint Series.

  • June 20 – Lincoln Park Speedway
  • June 21 – Bloomington Speedway
  • June 22 – Try State Speedway
  • June 23 – Terre Haute Action Track

Each race will pay the winner $6,000 to win and $500 to start and include a $26,000 purse. Both series expect a champion to be crowned at the end of the four events with extra contingency prizes to be announced.

The Maverick Winged Sprint Series held one event in 2023 and it was a huge success. Over 45 cars showed up to Lincoln Park Speedway for the inaugural $6,000 to win event. Cale Thomas picked up the victory over the field that included Brenham Crouch, Brady Bacon, Bill Balog, Zane Devault, Kevin Thomas Jr. and many more.

Sprint Car Unlimited’s Jeremy Elliot caught up with Newton to ask some questions about the new series and his plans for 2024. Check out that interview below, as Newton has no filter when talking about his goals and desires with his sprint car series and his own team.

In short, Newton created the series as a way for young drivers and wingless drivers to get a chance to compete for a decent payout behind the wheel of a winged 410 car. Newton doesn’t like to travel far for his races, so he wanted to keep the series local in Indiana. He stated that he was open to working with other existing regional series to put on events, and that is all falling into place right now.

I want to give some credit to Kevin Newton and what he has done and is currently doing for the sport. He owns four winged 410 sprint cars and four motors. He regularly fields cars for himself and guys like Parker Price-Miller and Kevin Thomas Jr. He sponsors a USAC car and series. It is guys like Newton that are truly growing the sport. Stay tuned for more announcements about the Maverick series and all other 410 winged series.
