The final part of my “dirt education” section will be covering dirt midgets. Dirt Midgets originated in the United States in the 1930s and get their name because they are basically a mini wingless sprint car. Also referred to as “speedcars” in Australia, dirt midgets have been used as a stepping stone for young drivers to advance their careers in motorsports for years. Dirt Midgets are not just for young drivers though, as some the best dirt racing drivers in the world still compete in midgets.

Hey Google, define “Dirt Midget”

A dirt midget is a scaled down wingless sprint car specifically designed to run on dirt ovals. They are custom built frames and typically use a 4-cylinder engine, resulting in a high power-to-weight ratio.

Dirt Midget Specifications

Unlike other dirt racing chassis, the somewhat simple design of a dirt midget frame makes it possible for teams to safely fabricate their own cars. Arguably the most famous man in dirt midget racing, Keith Kunz, runs his own race team where they build their own frames and cars. Some other popular dirt midget chassis builders include Spike Chassis and DRC Chassis.
